The photos from Memphis 1968 were taken on assignment to cover the march in the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assination at a Memphis hotel. The country was still in a state of shock and outrage at the killing. Martial law was declared in Memphis and National Guard troops were sent in to prevent violence. Nobody was allowed on the streets the night before the march and a curfew was imposed. It had been less than 48 hours since the killing and emotions were still high. These photos are from several contact sheets that were left from that assignment. The original negatives were discarded when the newspaper I was working for at that time moved to a new location. I apologize for the quality of the images, but thought the historical significance was enought to justify posting them.

Children too young to realize the importance of what was happening view the event from a side street near their home.

National Guard troops from around the state of Tennessee had been ordered into Memphis because of fears of riots and violence. They lined most of the side streets of the march. The expected violence did not happen.

Tensions ran high as marchers led by Dr. King's widow slowly made their way through downtown Memphis. It was less than 48 hours since the murder of King and most people feared violence would break out.
December 2, 2009 - 2:28 pm - almost seems surreal today, but in fact it is our history. nice work, my friend.

Seems like this lonesome country road is trying to follow the sun as the daylight grows shorter.

Using the old advice to let nothing go to waste, this old truck cab in Lee County, Virginia makes a handy wood storage in preparation for cold winter days.
